Vellacott History Prize

Congratulations to James Estlin (WH4), Joe McManners (Sc4) and Will Snowball (FH4) who were all shortlisted for the Vellacott History Prize this year.

Run annually by Peterhouse, Cambridge, it is probably the most prestigious schools' history essay prize in the country. Their varied interests are shown by essays about Chivalry in the late middle ages, Nationalism in 19th century Germany and Heresy in late medieval Europe.

Joseph accepting donations for Barnardo's Charity!

Just received an email from Joseph's mum Deborah kicking off Joseph's project with the Barnardo's Children's Charity.

Unlike a lot of charities that ask for donations, this one here has been set up by Joseph himself thru the Justgiving.com website. By donating to his charity you can actually see your donation recorded on the main page and you are also allowed to leave a personal comment.

For those of you that are not familiar with Barnardo's, it is a childrens charity for needy, abused and homeless children in the UK. Joseph's Great Grandmother came thru the system as did 2 of her siblings so he holds a special place in his heart for the organization. We have already seen the fantastic work he has done this Christmas season by starting up the toy drive at his school and now we all can share in that same spirt of helping as one big Joseph Mcmanners family.

Let's help Joseph stand out here and be recognized ! Here is the link for the donation page until the staff gets the main link up at the bottom of the page.

We all wanted to help him with the toy drive, now we have the opportunity to help Joseph ALL the time!

Thank You on behalf of Joseph and of course the Barnardo's Children Charity.

Floyd Reading Competition Winners
Date: 02/02/2009

The Floyd Reading competition is designed to enable all boys to share a love of literature and to think carefully about what makes a successful performance reading. All boys in the Novi and 2nd Year participate in the competition and it is voluntary for boys in the senior years. Boys select and read either an extract of prose or a poem in the preliminary rounds and read both in the semi-final and final; every year the audience hears both new versions of old favourites and are introduced to exciting works for the first time.

This year's competition was judged by Rebecca de Pelet, Head of English at Sherborne School in Dorset.

Congratulations to the participants and winners in the 2009 Floyd Reading Competition.

Winners:

Seniors:Alex WilsonOH5
Juniors:Joseph McMannersSC3
Novi:George RendellSC1

Once again Joseph does very well in school.
Joseph News Update 02 December!

Finally we get good news on Joseph's progress with his singing and all.

First of all, like it states, his voice has finally settled enough where he feels confident (and so does Mum) that he can return to singing once again!! I know all of us have been waiting to hear the news and have patiently waited for his return. I do, and he as well asks for just a bit more time and the second album will be out early next year.

I know, we all waited what seems like forever, but in the long run Joseph was smart enough to know that so he didn't ruin his voice it was best to pretty much sit things out until everything was in place and ready. He thanks everyone for their support, patience and understanding and he himself can not wait for the release!

Also, some school news from Joseph as well here. He has and is in the process of taking "A" Level courses in Maths &....I love this one...History..and is really hitting the books hard. Since he already pretty much has the Music courses aced out he figured he would tackle these two other subjects with a vengeance.

Also tomorrow is a big day for Joseph (03 December) as he turns 16!! I'm sure all of you will wish him a great 16th year full of successes!

Along with Joseph our Uni Student Ryan has been taken on by Joseph's Mum to redo her website completely over. That, plus his schoolwork has Ryan away from the forum a bit so he asked me to post up this info.

However, it's not all work. Both Ryan & Joseph are currently doing battle with each other over their Xbox games as I type this.

Hopefully more news will follow and as soon as I hear from either Ryan or Joseph, I'll get it up as quick as possible!

Kevin, Moderator
joemcmanners.com

Joseph wins Prestigous Poetry Contest!

Looks like our Joseph is continuing to excel with his studies. If you remember, Joseph entered the Foyle Young Poets of the Year competition back in May. Joseph, along with 4 other members of his school, has been named "Foyle Young Poets of the Year", having been selected out of a feild of 12,000 entrants!

Almost sounds like a repeat of the "Little Prince Comp"!

The Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award is Britain's most prestigious poetry prize for young writers between the ages of 11-17; each year the hundred best young poets in the UK and beyond are selected. Judges of the competition are published prize-winning poets Eva Salzman and Ian McMillan.

Also being recognized was Joseph's Instructor, the head of the English department at his school, being named as one of the eight leading teachers of poetry in the UK. Bea Colley, the Education Manager of the Poetry Society says that he has "demonstrated the highest level of dedications to teaching poetry in school"

With honor, I present Joseph's winning entry:

Timekeeper

A sky of clarity, peculiarity, globularity,
With a capacity for veracity and audacity
A complex mix of lighting, delighting and insight

A swirl of time, stars and nothingness,
A culmination of the heavens and memory
The Timekeeper saw it all

Every jeer, every cheer, every leer
Nectarines, a cheesy magazine, the unforeseen
The sulphurous cannoneer, the brutal buccaneer, the illustrious musketeer
The Timekeeper saw it all

And as the impressionists worked their magic,
As the excluded brooded
And fathers snoozed to the laments of radio 3
You always saw it all

Staring into the cold night
The haze of breath breaking the darkness
A thousand stars, from a world away
Shoot their ancient light into my unthinking eyes

They will witness it all
From the first crack as life tore into existence
To the moment when Pandora’s box is closed
And the world becomes silent

Joseph McManners

More Joseph News

Just had a convo with Deborah, some interesting stuff:

We actually talked a lot about 'The Little Prince.' Malcom you might find this interesting, Deborah actually had a cameo as a weed. LOL. Remember those weeds that the Prince pulls up from the ground? Well, they're actually people's hands hidden behind the sand dune. One of which, was Deborah. Also, the plane was offered to Joseph as a present and is currently sitting in one of their many barns. Something I never knew.

Joseph plans on traveling to Hong Kong in December where he hopes to have about 18 concerts. This isn't confirmed yet so all you Chinese fans, don't get your hopes up.

Deborah will be giving me some autographs on Friday so all who are promised one will get them soon

Joseph hopes to take AS Level Mandarin - fascinating

We've all heard about Joseph and the tractor (if you haven't, browse through some of the existing news articles) well it turns out, he's just as rampant on his bike as he is on his tractor. Turns out he's buckled Deborah's front tyre which she needs to get fixed.

Joseph is taking a liking to gardening, looks like there's a possibility of re-opening their farm

That's it I'm afraid.

Joseph News

Although we spoke for a very long time this evening, there really isn't that much to update you with:

Joseph is still undergoing his exams so between them and his rehearsals for Dido (which I will be attending, received my official invite this evening ) he's a very busy chap

Deborah cut his hair! She says he looks too much like a guy now and she's worried what the director of the play will think now that he doesn't have long hair

Too add to the hilarious story about the tractor, although the tractor was fixed, Deborah managed to break it again so it's had to go in for another service.

Joseph's Chinese teacher stated that in the 8 years he's taught at Joseph's school, Joseph is definitely within the top 3 of his favourite students (academically speaking)

Some of you may know, Joseph entered a Poetry competition organised by Classic FM (http://www.arvonfoundation.org/) and apparently Joseph's poetry is fantastic so if he wins this will obviously be a big deal for him because poetry ties nicely in with song writing. So that's very exciting stuff.

Joseph hopes to achieve a grade 7 in piano and a grade 8 in singing. I managed to acquire my grade 8 piano when I was 16 and I offered him all my music books and theory manuals. Hopefully he can pass them with a high pass.

I asked how tall Joseph is now, a lot of members have asked. His official height is 5'3"

Some of Joseph's teachers have put his name down as a potential candidate for Cambridge University which, as most will know, is the best Uni in the UK and is the equivalent to the American Harvard. This is excellent news.

I think that's all we covered. If not, I'll add more.
